How to Wash Cloth Nappies

This guide explains how to wash cloth nappies properly, including storage, pre-wash routines, and main wash cycles.

Washing cloth nappies is easier than many parents expect. Once you have a simple routine in place, reusable nappies become just another part of your normal laundry schedule.

Modern washing machines make cloth nappy care simple and hygienic, and with the right routine your nappies will stay clean, fresh, and absorbent.

1. Store used nappies

Solid waste should be tipped or rinsed into the toilet before the nappy is placed in a dry pail/laundry basket with plenty of air flow. Do not cover with a lid.

Many families wash nappies every two to three days, which helps prevent odours and keeps nappies clean.

Avoid soaking nappies in water, as this can damage materials and lead to bacteria growth.

2. Pre – Wash

A short pre-wash cycle removes most of the urine and waste from the nappies.

This cycle usually uses warm water and a small amount of detergent. The goal of the pre-wash is to prepare the nappies so they can be properly cleaned during the main wash.

After the pre-wash, nappies can be stored again until there are enough for a full load.

3. Main Wash

The main wash is the cycle that fully cleans the nappies. Use a longer wash cycle with warm or hot water (40 – 60°C) and a full amount of detergent.

The washing machine should be reasonably full so the nappies can move around and clean properly.

Many parents add smaller clothing items such as baby clothes or wipes to help create good agitation in the machine.

4. Dry the Clean Nappies

Cloth nappies can be dried in several ways.

Many families line dry nappies outside, which allows sunlight to help remove stains naturally. Indoor drying racks or tumble dryers can also be used.

Avoid hanging the outer shells in direct sunlight as this can damage the material – in the dryer use a low heat for the outer shells.
